The cost of an original artwork from a reputable artist can range from surprisingly affordable to six figures or more. I’ve personally have purchased great paintings second hand for next to nothing, but purchasing new, original artwork is a different story.

I typically start pricing my drawings at $100, although the price can increase depending on the design’s size, detail, and overall complexity. A simple drawing may require considerably less time and materials than a large, highly detailed commission.

Acrylic and Watercolor Paintings

When it comes to original paintings, acrylic and watercolor artwork can be more accessible in terms of price. These mediums can often be completed more quickly and with fewer materials than oil paintings, allowing me to create a meaningful, long-lasting piece at a lower starting price.

With proper care, a well-made painting can remain beautiful for decades, making original artwork an investment in something you can enjoy for years to come.

How Much Do Oil Paintings Cost?

Oil paintings require a greater investment because the creative process typically involves more preparation, materials, and time. The slower drying time of oil paint also makes the process more deliberate and, at times, more tedious.

I currently price my original oil paintings starting at $750 per square foot of canvas. The additional time and materials that go into each piece allow me to create a more substantial finished work designed to be enjoyed for generations.

Ultimately, the price of original artwork reflects much more than the materials alone. The artist’s time, experience, creative process, level of detail, and the uniqueness of the finished piece all contribute to its value.
